SPF or Spray Polyurethane Foam describes a category of high-performance spray foam insulation and air barrier material that delivers multiple benefits in one application. These advantages include high insulation values, near-zero air permeability, increased building strength, severe weather and flood resistance, increased occupant comfort, improved indoor air quality, reduced operating costs and lower environmental impacts.

ABOUT SPF

Why haven't I heard of SPF Roofing?

SPF is manufactured by BASF and has been used in the construction industry as a form of insulation for many years. It is also marketed as SKYTITE®.

This product formerly known as ELASTOSPRAY®

The SPF product for roofing has been prevalent in small areas around the United States. BASF manufactures both closed-cell and open-cell spray polyurethane foam products for residential and commercial construction, providing the right SPF system for any type of well-engineered building envelope. The BASF two component application process features a wide range of specially formulated polyurethane spray foam offerings that meet specific site and surface requirements.

Can it be applied over an existing roof?

Yes, SPF can be applied over most existing roofs.

Does it have a high wind resistance

Yes, SPF roofing systems are great for high wind areas. During Hurricane Katrina, the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., right on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico was directly in the path of Hurricane Katrina. Though blowing sand and flying debris scoured the roof’s protective coating and punctured the spray-applied polyurethane foam (SPF), only a few chunks made it through the three inches of foam into the underlying metaldeck to cause a few minor leaks. No part of the roof blew off. The roof and the building weathered the storm so well that it was used as an emergency shelter in the days immediately following the storm. Built in 1977, the 24,780-square-foot domed stadium has had an SPF roof since its original construction. SPF roofing adheres to the roof deck and penetrations with no fasteners. Lightweight and monolithic, it has no joints or edges to catch the wind.
